Jlin first appeared on Planet Mu’s second “Bangs & Works” compilation, which had a huge impact on electronic/club music, bringing footwork to a wider audience. Jlin doesn’t think of herself as a footwork artist, though, having morphed its sounds into something entirely new.
She hails from Gary, Indiana, a place close yet distant enough from Chicago to allow her to develop this different perspective on the genre. Her debut album “Dark Energy” – released in 2015 – is filled to the brim with dramatic tracks bursting with force, with dense rhythmic patterns and tension that overwhelm the listener. The album’s innovative sound propelled it to the top of many of the year’s Best Of lists.
Jlin’s sophomore album “Black Origami” was released in 2017 to even greater critical acclaim and attention. Taking her unique sound further into uncharted territories, it features collaborations with Holly Herndon and William Basinski. Also last year, Jlin composed the music for Autobiography, a major new dance work by Wayne McGregor, one of the UK’s best known choreographers. Expect even bigger things in 2018 and 2019.
We are currently booking Jlin’s new A/V show, a raw and powerful performance that is paired with visuals created and performed by MFO and Theresa Baumgartner. We are also booking Autobiography Edits, a compact version of UK choreographer Wayne McGregor’s Autobiography, with live music by Jlin.
Don’t hesitate to contact us if you’d like to discuss these performances, or have any other enquiry to make regarding Jlin’s music.
